To clarify, wondering how someone with this illness came to understand that NPD/BPD is an illness, instead of going through life as a 'this is just who I am' wrecking ball, and what steps were taken to take care of the NPD/BPD and implement strategies to make sure to not hurt other people.

Not excusing people who choose to treat others poorly.  If I understand correctly, people with NPD/BPD do not know they are treating other people poorly because they *feel* that their choice to torture someone else is justified (as they rationalize to themselves by citing the behavior of the person they are torturing).
