On 28th September, my husband and I went for our first consultation appointment at a clinic in Berkeley, Ca, where the fertility doctor has his office. My cycle started on 28th September as well. I am 39 years old and I have a normal 28-day Cycle. My husband has vasectomy done a long time ago and we decided for “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm. The doctor suggested medication from the beginning because of my age (39), but I still wanted to try a “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm because in spite of my age, I have a normal 28 day Cycle, both fallopian tubes opened and no problem so far as we know from the blood tests he had me do and my medical history. But the doctor was still prescribing medication even though he knew I want an “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm this time. And he told me that I am stubborn. I answered him that I am not stubborn, I just know what I want. And that this is my choice this time. I just want to give myself a chance to a “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm to see how is going. We decided to do the “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm in November at the right time. My cycle began on 26, October and my menstruation lasted 8 days (26 Oct - 2 November inclusive) I started to test for fertility and ovulation with Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test on 3rd November, which was the first day following the last day of menstruation. Fertility window (3-7) On my first day (3rd, November) the test showed low fertility (O) On my second day (4th, November) at 8:AM the test showed high fertility (Blinking Smiley) On this same day of 4th, November at 9:40 AM I had an appointment for ultrasound at the fertility doctor’s office. I informed him of the above and he also knew from the last month appointments that I have a normal cycle of 28 days, the result from Hysterosalpingography was normal (both tubes are opened), and that I want a “Natural Cycle” IUI this time. He did the ultrasound and discovered that the lining of my uterus is 9mm, and while he was searching for follicles and kept saying that he didn’t see any, He finally found one which he said is 16mm. And while he was doing the ultrasound, he asked me why I did not take the medications he prescribed. And I told him the same thing I told him the first time, that in spite of my age (39), because I do not seem to have a fertility problem at this time and my cycle is normal and my fallopian tubes are opened, I wanted to give myself a chance to see if I can remain pregnant and keep it through a “natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm. And that I do not want to take medication unless they are necessary. Immediately after these findings, the same day of 4th, November, he said that we will do the IUI in 40 minutes at 10:40 AM. I was surprised and worried because as my period started on 26th, October, and 14 days since then would show that my ovulation would be on 8th, November, and my most fertile days would be 3rd November-7th November, an IUI now, on 4th November, would be too early. Especially after his findings of only one 16 mm follicle and 9mm uterine lining. I cannot find any one reason why he would want to do the IUI now. More, 4th, November was the first day the Clearblue Advanced Ovulation Test showed high fertility (Blinking Smiley). To me he had all the reasons to wait at least till 6th November (Friday) which would have been closer of ovulation (8th November). Or to wait until 9th November (Monday), which would have been the first day after ovulation (8th November). So, with his nurse and an intern student present, while in his cabinet and immediately after ultrasound, his findings, and his decision to do the IUI now, I asked if my follicle is big enough. He said that my follicle is 16mm and that I am in high fertility according to the Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test that I tested earlier this morning just before arriving to his clinic. Then I asked so its ok to do it now? Do I have enough follicles or are big enough? He said its ok and that is just one follicle. Then, I told him that the Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test did not show Peak Fertility (ready to ovulate/LH surge), but just high fertility (raised estrogen). I asked if it is not too early. And, while he was leaving the cabinet, he said, “better early than later “and closed the door. They all left, I dressed and left for 40 minutes. On the hall of his clinic I met again his nurse and I started to ask her some questions. I was very disoriented and confused. I did not know if I should be happy or worried for the doctor decision to do the IUI now. I repeated the same questions I asked the doctor while this nurse was present. So, I told her that my Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test showed high fertility early this morning. And that this high fertility day was the first day after the low fertility. I also told her that I had no peak fertility. And I asked if it is not too early for this IUI. She said that the doctor sees better than the Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation Test and that I should listen to him. Then, I asked her for how long after IUI the frozen sperm lives inside my fallopian tubes. She said for maximum of 24 hours (which I already knew) but I just wanted to hear it from her mouth. Even though this rush made no sense to me and it got me confused, anxious and excited, I returned in 40 minutes and did the IUI as they decided. I was still confused even after the procedure was over. Just before leaving the clinic, the nurse asked me to do a Progesterone blood test on 11/11/2020 and blood test for HCG Quantitative on 11/18/2020. I said I will, and I left. When I arrived home, I did a little research about the 16mm follicle size and 9mm uterine lining, so I confirm they are right for IUI. More I read, more I discovered, and I arrived at the conclusion that my IUI was done to early. So, I wonder why they thought I would ovulate on the 10th day of my cycle. When I have a normal 28-day cycle and my first day this month was on 26th October. My fallopian tubes are both opened. On 4th November he discovered only one 16mm follicle and uterine lining of 9mm. In parallel, the Clearblue Advanced Digital Ovulation test showed me the first day of high fertility (smiley blinking) and not peak fertility (solid smiley). So, in my opinion, the test almost confirms his findings in which the follicle is not mature enough (not ready to ovulate). Not even close. In my opinion I was in my first to second day in my fertility window which was 3-7 November. On 8th November I was expecting to ovulate. I think that because I choose “Natural Cycle” IUI with donor frozen sperm, we should have waited that the follicle grow more and that I really have had a peak fertility on my Clearblue ovulation test, then do the IUI the very next day which would have been 9th November(Monday) or at the earliest on 6th November(Friday). Thank you for reading about my experience, please tell me what you think. Was it early, normal, or anyone has had this kind of experience? What were the outcomes?
