I’m also rewatching it. Always loved it. Blair, Serena, Nate are all old money, multi hundred million dollar rich. Chuck bass clearly a billionaire. The Humphreys had their loft in Brooklyn before that was a thing, I guess?
Was Blair really old money? Her mom was a fashion designer but what about her grandparents and her father?
Probably through her dad. Remember she did not want to be like her mom. Her dad was a lawyer. Chuck was definitely new money though. He had more money than all of them because of his dad dying. He had enough money to pay off Blair’s dowry so her family wouldn’t go bankrupt.
Blair had to work and so did her mom. So I saw them more as newer money. Chuck’s dad was a businessmen that I assumed was a family business passed down. I thought Chuck was old money. Not as old as Nate and Serena but definitely older than Blair. Perfect excuse for me to go rewatch for the 100th time.
If I don’t know if Blair HAD to work. Her mom is probably old money who created a fashion line. It’s the kind of business rich people create. I think Blair is just ambitious. She was actually kind of progressive in a sense for a 2007 show. I think she aspired to be more Jackie O or even HRC than she aspired to be a pure socialite like Serena/lily/ and the grandmother. Blair did have that UMC ethos of hard work, striving and obsession with high status things. She seemed far too status conscious to be truly old money.
Yeah Blair was really focused on being in the right crowd. She considered Serena not truly part of the crowd in a way. I guess because Serena was more of a socialite. I think Serena's grandmother was more of what Blair aspired to be, but Lily and Serena became more it girls. Lily kind of cared about social graces, but in a way she was always failing...married too many times, married a has been singer, jail/house arrest etc. And she didn't seem to be too embarrassed by it. Nate's mom was mortified when his dad went to jail. Serena was kind of the same dated anyone didn't really matter if they had status. Blair on the other hand only wanted to be with men with power which is why I think her and Dan could never really work.
Yes, but I would say the fact that Lily and Serena were so nonchalant about their behavior speaks to their comfort in their position in NY society. At the end of the day, no matter whom Lily married or didn't marry or how many scandals Serena was involved in, they would always be part of the elite due to their heritage and social status. Serena's carelessness and boredom with social rules and hierarchy also is representative of someone who takes her high status and privilege for granted. Blair, too, should not be acting like a striver. I am surprised they wrote that to be a part of her character consider she too is supposed to come from "good stock" and an illustrious family. Her marriage with Chuck Bass is also a step-down for her socially, because as wealthy as he was, he was new money and didn't bring much class or status to the union. I think she aspired to be more Jackie O or even HRC than she aspired to be a pure socialite like Serena/lily/ and the grandmother.
Yeah she definitely did, but she also wanted to be seen as cool. I guess she figured out how to do that by working in fashion.
