I think change is scary and transition is tough. Those of us who have one child in private have seen it work out, so it's simply not as scary. For the record, we are keeping our kids home the week of Thanksgiving for an extra two days so we can see grandma without worrying a lot. We have the option to be in the virutal cohorts for days we are not in school for our oldest. It's a way to do so without losing ground academically. I hope that can be the case for public schools as well.
I posted above about our experience with private. I have a kids in both public and private and I agree that you really need to start small, see how it works, and then build on that. One of my concerns about hybrid was that I didn't want to play a role in forcing teachers back into the building. When we first had the opportunity to come onto the campus, I spoke with several teachers about this. They described how starting small (short days, different cohorts, reinforcing masking and other rules about hand hygiene and social distancing) with the youngest learners was helpful in allaying their fears about returning to in-person learning. There will always be doubts. I absolutely had them as a parent. But if we take a cautious approach and see how it goes, we might find that it isn't as scary as we think. I also agree with the PPs who said that it would have made more sense to take risks at the beginning of the school year and planned for shutting down around the holiday months. But what's done is done. At minimum, if they can get a few kids back in person before Thanksgiving they will have some useful experience to draw on in the Spring, even if the entire population winds up shifting back to DL during the winter months.
