We have 2 kids under 5. I wouldn't even consider it at this age. For one thing, trudging up and down steps in the middle of the night to deal with an infant and a preschooler sounds horrible. But also, it would be a safety risk for me. What if theres a fire or something? Once they are both a bit older (like, youngest maybe around 7 or so), I think I would be ok with it.
+ 1 We bought our house last summer when kids were 2 and 4. Our oldest likes to come in our room around 5/6 am to snuggle before the alarm goes off and I don’t want anyone schlepping up and down stairs in the middle of the night. Seems like that would be especially tough during the newborn stage. But even more so, I’m terrified of an emergency. I can’t even imagine the horror of a house fire with kids on a different level. A friend told me a story of a family whose children were killed when the parents in the main level master bedroom could not get to them. There’s also just the run of the mill reasons that could come up too like a toddler puking middle of the night. I just sleep better with my kids easily accessible to me.
