Damascus is still racist AF I would never in a million years move there or send my kids to school there. My family that lives there is racist AF and so are their neighbors, even their teens are racist and redneck. The sports team comment above is 100% on point, though we had a few racist incidents with Bethesda Soccer. I would look at Clarksburg, Poolesville, Gaithersburg (QO), Boyds (Northwest) or even Urbana. Olney is getting better but has not gotten there yet, it is more diverse than Damascus but still deep roots in racism for the whites that remain.
My court in Olney is very diverse. There are really four American born, non imigrant houses. I am an immgirant, DH is white American born. My walks are full of diverse aquintaces. The new subdivision Olney Springs has a lot of Indians, Asians and Africans and African Americans. In fact, they are the majority comapred to white people there. They are outside all gathered with their kids riding bikes all the time. It looks like they are having a great time and over 10 kids are always playing together. It is true, that I don't see white families and kids playing and hanging out with them. When we moved here 9 years ago, my white older middle aged American neighbour, did tell my dh that she is relieved that the "right kind of people" moved in! Then she heard my accent, and only spoke to dh for the most part. I am white, but from the Balkans. Perhaps she was worried I was going to do her in? But, then I saw a bear and she did not, so my neighbouhood creed rose to "knows everything that is going on" and from then on I was privy to all the gossip she knew! They moved and immigrants moved into their house! Ha. Though, I gotta say, nobody keeps the lawn like white racists! This was just to say that I don't think, overall, Olney is racist, and that it is getting much better. Though, as an immigrant I probably do not have access to the thoughts of old timers in Olney. I really love living in Olney.
