I had to deal with this for a loooooonnnnnnggggg time. There are a few drug addicted/alcoholic parents in my neighborhood and I would explain to my kids, you can play with the kids, but there is an issue with the parents and I can't trust them to be around them alone. They would need to be keen on talk about drugs or mention of using drugs... I would not tolerate it. My kids also have some friends with parents who are extremely right wing racist, homophobes and mercenaries. I did not exclude the kids but I did talk to my kids and tell them that these kids come from a different "bad" home life than drug addiction and that I could not trust them alone with their parents but the children were welcome in our home... but if I hear any talk that is xenophobic, homophobic or killing... I would speak up and if they did not want me to speak up they should exclude the children. They never did exclude them. Of course, kids are a product of their home life and there were many comments made over the year and I did not tolerate it. "I can tell what country people come from, those men speak dirty spanish and my family speak educated spanish, you can't tell but I can"... Larlo, we don't speak about people as dirty or not dirty, you are a Xtian and that is not okay. No human is dirty. I could go on and on and on about the comments... but you get the idea, so sure they can be friends but NO I won't allow kids to be racist in my house.
