As long as the PNP has a "bassinet setting" meaning the mattress can be raised, that's all you need.  We actually threw away our little bassinet/changing part because our baby slept in the PNP in our room and the changer was always in the way.

Get a Fisher Price bouncer or a used Bjorn.  This is something they can only use a short time and they might hate it.  My sister has both and her baby likes them equally.

Can't speak to this one, but agree with others that a nice stroller is a good place to splurge.

Cheap changing pads are fine (like the Summer Infant one), and I'd get one for every floor of your house.
