I'm in my mid-50s and have always struggled with rhinitis and allergies. Interestingly, I also grew up on a farm and farm kids are supposed to have fewer allergies. I have allergies all year round and take antihistamines/nasal spray year round. I had sinus surgery about 10 years ago. One of the uncommon issues some people have with the surgery, especially if it was done many years ago, is that their noses constantly run. It was in the 'risks' section of my surgery but I don't remember why it would happen. I worked with a woman 20 years who had chronic rhinitis after nasal surgery but she was still happy with the surgery. For a very long time, my rhinitis was well controlled with allergy shots and decongestants (in addition to the antihistamines and nasal sprays). But, as you get older, decongestants can cause/exacerbate blood pressure issues so it's not recommended for regular use. My runny nose doesn't bother me so much during the day (although it runs a lot), it bothers me at night when it causes congestion and coughing. For me THAT is the most bothersome thing about it. When it's bad, I break out the Afrin (my regular nasal sprays are non-additictive/no rebound) and Nyquil. My DH doesn't seem to be bothered by my runny nose. We've been married 25 years.
