I have been tracking the COVID numbers very closely in Virginia, with a focus on Vienna (I live in town)l. Probably someone reading this follows my facebook posts. I am very concerned about the observed lack of social distancing. Outside is safer than inside, but not safe. And we do not know what is going on in peoples houses. I have seen facebook photos of kids and the friends at home. With that said, the data right now shows that teens and tweens have the lowest growth rate of any age group in Northern VA, with a slightly negative Rt. My guess is there is a teen/tween bubble. They isolate themselves. As long as the virus in to in the age group, they will remain ok. But, that could change quickly. I am very concerned. But, with that said, it is a small minority of kids that are doing this. My DD and her friends are all social isolating. And the number of young people I see is a small fraction of the community. But, there are some adult roll models, largely sports coaches (including highly regarded school coaches) that are encouraging kids to play there sports. And there is not social distancing -- there could be....close the bleachers to spectators and use those to spread out. Oh, and I do not believe this is isolated to Vienna. I see the same thing in Fairfax and in Arlington.
College kids just received an email and tests kits this week, so those tests have not been processed yet. I am seeing the opposite. My kid's friends have not being socially distancing from the March, was hanging out all together at everyone's houses and outdoors, went together to beach houses, playing sports together, having sleepovers. We have a lot of MD parents in this group and a lot of scientists parents and we are all OK with this. None of the kids or parents became ill with Covid so far. I am sorry if you succumb to all this "social distancing" thing and have to put your and your child's life on hold.
YET. in the last 10 days, Fairfax County cases have been growing at 10% per day. Vienna seems to be increasing. I am sad that you are ruining our community by putting short term desires ahead of long term safety. I bet you were one of the people out watching the baseball games last week.
They will grow more since we are doing more testing. The numbers will spike since all returning to college kids are required to take a test, so we will see more and more positive cases. And this is a normal course for the virus. You should check the number of how many of the people who tested positive were actually hospitalized or died.
Except, if you look at the numbers by age, th increase was in people working age, not in college age people. So, your MAGA narrative goes poof.
