I do this but it’s stretch ponte pants, flats in summer and boots in winter, a long cardigan or silk jacket-y thing and a scarf or a necklace. Sometimes a shell and sometimes a turtleneck when it’s really cold. I have very light, loose weave cardigans for hot days. It’s pretty close to what Elizabeth Warren wears but I am fat so I prefer a longer cardigan over her more structured, shorter jackets. It’s like a suit but more comfortable, and it’s terrific for air travel. I almost never wear a skirt or heels unless I’m at a meeting in a hotel, where I don’t have to go outside. But, I’m really tall and I know some shorter women like the height boost from heels. And obviously I’m not a litigator or anything. But I find with this outfit and a scarf I’m formal enough for most settings.
Thank you for mentioning Elizabeth Warren who is a much better example of the uniform philosophy than Pelosi. That is so clearly what she is doing. I think all her shells are black as well as the pants and the only variation is the color of the jacket.
Jackets are the most expensive part, so for those of us on budgets, its easier to swap out the shell/blouse and just have a few jackets. I'm now over 50 and not as thin as I once was, and I've found one style of ponte pants from Talbots, and a particular blouse from Ann Taylor works for me. Bonus that the blouses are all washable but don't have that awful look. I generally wear with cardigans in the winter. I have a couple of fancy suit jackets for when I need to be more formal, which isn't often. However, right now, I'm in the office but we have no in person meetings, so it's washable chinos (again from Talbots -- they fit me), washable blouse and good eye makeup (as we're in masks a lot).
