If it was as bad as the naysayers claim, then no one would sign up. But I know of many au pairs who are here because the program was recommended to them by an older sister or cousin. The program is popular for a reason.
seriously
+1. We had a German au pair for two years. She went to Nantucket with us for two weeks and Hawaii the next year for two weeks. She took college classes. Had her friends come over after we all went to bed. She found a nice boyfriend. We still stay in touch weekly. She had a lot of money saved up by the time she left. She said it is super popular. She took her own trips all over the US in her two years. Not bad considering she drove kids to school. Packed lunches. Did their laundry and made them dinner some nights. I think a lot of au pairs in DC had similar experiences. She had a car to use on weekends. I can’t believe these naysayers above. From our perspective she was invaluable. She did carry her weight. She wrapped the kids presents. Helped with some errands. She was part of the family. But she definitely benefited financially and culturally.
