I don’t want this to be political, although I fully support the protesters. But from a health perspective, don’t we have a giant test case in terms of how effective the masks are? I see most protesters wearing them. There have to be a symptomatic carriers in the crowds. Do you think there will be huge spikes in a few weeks? I’m hoping not and then we can all start going back to mostly regular life, at least outside, with masks on.
No it is not a giant test case because it was so uncontrolled. Some people had masks, some didn't, some pulled them down occasionally to yell or speak. Some were pressed close to people, some kept a distance, some were running, some were yelling. A spike in cases would mean that people were too close and there were others spreading the virus. It would not be able to say anything meaningful about masks. The reason we have so little data about the mechanics and details of how the virus spreads (with or without masks) is because it is unethical to purposefully expose people to the virus in an experiment. Instead you have to rely on anecdotes like church services and parties and people's extremely faulty memories. And on tangential experiments like droplets from healthy people sneezing and hypothetical aerodynamics in restaurants.
