For starters teachers in Moco magnets surely get paid more than a DC Charter, plus they’re unionized. Basis is not a Moco magnet and won’t be.
+1. People have unrealistic expectations of a charter school compared to a huge public school system with a ton more resources and funds. No one is making people stay at Basis if they are unhappy. You want moco magnets, then move to Moco. But it’s a lot better than SH in terms of peer groups and academic standards.
BASIS parent who calls this approach a real cop-out. You want better schools, insist on them collectively as parents, voters, DC taxpayers, and charter stakeholders. Lobby for charters to be given a fairer share of DC public school resources. Don't take every mediocre dish DCPCS and BASIS dish out and call it acceptable and inevitable. For starters, BASIS should not have been allowed to renovate that building with zero outdoor space. The franchise could have been required to build outdoor space on the roof, like the basketball court my Manhattan MS had on theirs (without any other outdoor space). Come on, BASIS HQ shouldn't have been allowed to change the HOS almost every year since the DC branch opened. We took one issue we had at BASIS to the DC Public School Ombudsman and won, after BASIS admins backed down. We left eventually, but on pretty good form.
