I was kinda meh about a minivan. I knew it was the best idea, but wasn't super excited about how much it cost for how lame it would look/feel. We just got one, and it's AWESOME. Like I was fine with getting one, but I am surprised by how much I already really love it. It doesn't feel as big as it is. And the best part, the part you can not replicate in an SUV is the SLIDING DOORS. It's AWESOME. So easy to get the kids in and out, my 5 year old can get in and out ON HER OWN NOW. This is a revelation and has quite honestly made my life easier in the 3 weeks I've had the van. So yeah, I'd rent a minivan and have her try it for a week before ruling it out.
See my post above about the Tesla Model X. My three kids (8, 6, 3.5) can all get themselves in and out on their own. I agree, though, it's a fantastic feature, and I'd be loathe to forego it at this point. I don't know of any other SUVs that have sliding/automatic doors, but I could be wrong. FWIW, I think we would love a minivan, too. We made the mistake of test-driving the X and then there was no going back.
Can you take a road trip in a Tesla though? I'd love an electric car for commuting, but not being able to drive very far would do it in for me. Also, that car starts at $80k.
Of course you can! We've done many road trips in ours. We bought early enough that charging along the way is free, and honestly, we'd stop about as often as we need to charge just because of the kids anyway. Our range is about 230 miles, though we don't go super low. As it is, we stop, plug in, get snacks/hit the bathroom, and then we're back on our way. I know the cost is prohibitive for most. For us, it was important to do what we can to reduce carbon emissions; we could afford it, so we did it.
That is simply crazy. and how long do you wait after 230 miles to recharge? You paid Tesla price for that? Sounds stupid to me but I guess you get people's attention...
