Contesting tickets online is BS. Yes it suspends the ticket so no further action is taken, but you don't get a hearing or anything like that. I had a ticket from nearly a year ago and everytime I checked it just showed as contested. Suddenly on Friday I got an email stating that a judgement has been made and I'm liable. I'm like WTF??? I didn't even get a chance to discuss why I'm not liable other than the tiny box with the word limit.
I've successfully contested tickets online. I even successfully appealed online when I lost after contesting online -- this was when I knew I was in the right, whereas OP seems to be ambiguous about this. I wouldn't say that contesting online is BS, or at least no more than contesting in person. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
