Bottom heavy?! Yes, HoCo schools are “rated” higher because they have a lot fewer black and Hispanic kids, who tend not to score as highly on standardized tests. “Ratings” around here are 100% about whiteness/Asianness of a school system. When people say they want “good schools,” you can simply cut and paste “white and Asian schools.”
MCPS: 30.1% Hispanic 29.3% White 21.3% Black 14.3% Asian HCPS: 22.4% Asian 24.0% Black 11.3% Hispanic 35.8% White so...not really. You know it's easy to look this stuff up, right?
So MoCo is more than half (51%) black/hispanic and HoCo is only 1/3 (35%) black/hispanic? I'd call that a major difference. HoCo is one in three and MoCo is the majority.
Exactly...thanks to the poster who shared these numbers. The biggest issue is the % of Hispanics. These numbers seem to mesh with the numbers posted earlier about limited English proficiency, which I am pasting below for your convenience: HoCo Free/Reduced Lunch – 22.7% Limited English Proficient – 5.7% Special Education – 9.6% MoCo: Free/Reduced Lunch – 34.2% Limited English Proficient – 17.4% Special Education – 11.2%
It's not a problem "with Hispanics". The test scores are brought down because people are first gen Americans or immigrants from elsewhere. Either way, they aren't speaking English as their first language and that makes it hard to do well on tests. I agree that HoCo will even out with MoCo as more Hispanics more out there for cheaper housing. You can buy a frigging McMansion out there for 500k.
Sorry, but a very large percentage of those non English speaking students ARE Hispanic. Not sure where you are getting your info.
