My LEGO-loving 5yo loves the LEGO Technic series - some of the sets are expensive, but Bash and Whack are under $20 and are our go-to birthday gift. They have a pull-back mechanism that makes them fun to play with once they're built. If I know they aren't into LEGO as much, I've lately been gifting craft kits. Tulip makes good tie-dye kits, or else your local Michaels will have a range you can browse through.
The age pretty much looks like 7 plus for these, though. Again, the ages I am shopping for are 4,4,4,3. Legos seem like a good idea though. And no, I am not buying a cutesy craft kit for the girl and legos for the boys. That's so messed up. Even my Amazon search for Legos was annoying - it autopopulated legos for girls or legos for boys. Ick. Not sure why everyone loves stop rockets - I got some for my nephews, and they were fun for a day but then quickly got boring.
To clarify, the kids are turning 5, 5, 5, 4. They are currently 4, 4, 4, 3
