^ my kid is short, fast, technically skilled and very tough. He gets played at center back and defensive center mid. He is the toughest tackler going in hard against players twice his size and always comes out with the ball. Playing for years with his older brother and brother’s friends helped him naturally learn to shield the ball very, very well and also have no fear. His agility, low center of gravity trips up bigger players. I don’t think he will end up “short” , just average size. But playing with older kids a lot in the younger years at parks and out back really helped him. I did make sure not to start U9 at a club that looks for sheer physicality. There aren’t many. Many were going to default him to 2nd team based on stature and even told us that. We found a club that could care less about size. He plays on a first team and often trains up in age. The overall team is on the smaller size (at this club he is solid of the pack in height vs one of the tiniest at other club) and they routinely beat those big first division teams—more and more as the years have gone by. My biggest advice is getting him out of a club that doesn’t give him a chance merely because of size. It will mean the biggest Clubs in the area are a no-go. He’ll get buried on a lower team and not developed properly.
Depends on the club and the team. Just watched Bethesda's top U11 team, and it's one of the shortest overall teams I've seen in a long time.
Arlington's top U11 boys team also has lots of shorter players. I don't think a lack of height holds kids back at this age at many clubs. But a lack of speed and aggression does. A small, highly technical player who is also fast and aggressive won't have a problem getting noticed.
