Yeah, I'm really annoyed that my 4-year old iPhone is a mess. I put my foot down and refused to replace it after two years. The battery is good for a few hours at best, the phone dials up calls randomly, etc. I've taken good care of it over the years. It's probably a combination of planned obsolescence and poor quality Chinese crap. If another company comes along with a more reliable product I'm jumping ship. You shouldn't have to replace a $$$ product every two years.
My previous mid-range android phone lasted 6 years. My DH's lasted 7. I had to replace mine because of a total system crash, and his was finally physically wrecked. I'm on year 2 for my current, he's on year 1. Each was under $200 to replace. You might want to look at the other options unless you absolutely need an iPhone for some reason. My DD has an iPhone because her school has them use devices and having an iPhone simplifies things. Hers last about 3 years before they're no longer effective (too little battery life, can no longer upgrade OS and can't get version of app, flaky behavior...), and of course they cost about 3x what our phones cost even for the basic model. My DH I used the same charging cables for our previous phones their entire life, as well as an extra in our cars and at work. My DD goes through iphone charging cables regularly. She's not destructive, apple just doesn't have the same focus on quality that other companies have. Their stuff is pretty but disposable.
