What is it about DCUM that obsessively hates Elrich so much? He won. The primary (which I know was a virtual tie), and the general (by a lot). And he won his Council race three terms before that. Clearly, a great amount of people like him. What is it about the DCUM demographic that despises him?
He doesn't enjoy widespread popularity. It was a weird election that ended up offering a fool from the far right and a fool from the far left. Floreen was in the middle and didn't connect anyone but what really matters is the union support. Montgomery County politics are driven by who gets the union. It controls the BOE and the County Council. The Silver Spring/TP progressives do not have much sway in numbers. They are simply loud but they will consistently vote for whomever is the farthest left. If someone more centrist than Elrich was on the furthest left on the ticket they would still come out and vote. He is hated because people are really getting edgy about the financial problems in MoCo. The warning about dropping the credit rating is bad. People see how DC and VA economies and appreciation are sky rocketing while MoCo is in the red. Elrich isn't doing anything to turn this around. The only thing you hear about him is all the internal chaos from not being able to manage or PR stunts in Silver Spring to the loud crazies.
Elrich isn't far left. And Ficker isn't far right, though he is a fool. Also, when I read about people explaining that the unions control the elections in Montgomery County, I take it to mean, "My preferred candidate lost." Meanwhile, DC and Fairfax are also having budget issues.
