So, if she was married to one man, how can she file a joint tax return (for at least 2 years) with a different man? (and, BTW - the Snopes article indicates the theory is unproven)
It is very revealing that you are suggesting that she was possibly married to her brother. Is there anything negative you won't believe about a Muslim? For what it is worth -- likely very little if this poster is representative -- here is how Omar has explained her complicated personal life: https://kstp.com/kstpImages/repository/cs/files/Ilhan%20Omar%20Statement.pdf
Could you clarify: if Omar married in her faith based tradition before legally divorcing her husband, will she have to re-marry her new husband in a civil ceremony? I ask because it sounds like her faith based divorce was not legal.
No doubt she has had a complicated personal life. To put it mildly. In general, if she had a civil, rather than a common law, marriage she needs a legal, civil divorce before she can enter into a civil or common law marriage with another man. Because bigamy laws But, we are talking about multiple countries, multiple states, state and federal law overlapping. I would need a timeline, a lot more info and several hours of research to figure out her tax status in 2015. Which is why even Fox is careful to say it appears she may have falsely filed tax documents. They can’t get it straightened out enough to say she did anything wrong for certain. Clearly someone looked at this. She paid them to do so If they were competent, then she is almost certainly legally okay. Otherwise, she would have amended her returns to change her filing status. Because she knows Trumps IRS would love to bust her for tax fraud. But, it is definitely complex. And you would need a lot more info on dates and places to know for certain. Unlike a Fox and OP, I can admit when I just don’t know something. I see a scenario where her filing was fine. It’s also possible it wasn’t. The info just isn’t there. I also know that marrying in ones faith tradition does not mean you want to impose that tradition on others. I got married in the Catholic Church. I’m not even raising Catholic kids, let alone trying to make Catholic sacrament of marriage the one true way. Marrying according to Muslim customs does not mean OMG! Sharia law! Separation of church and state.
