This is actually true but people get weird about requiring narrower regional names. I'm from the Southern Tier part of upstate and there I think it is rooted in resentment of the entire rest of the state only being considered in terms of NOT being NYC. There's an underdog complex.[/quote]

Also it’s obnoxious to reference areas that people commute to NYC from as “upstate”.   These are places that are essentially focused on NYC - it’s where people work, it’s their news stations and newspapers, it’s the reason they live there in the first place, so to be dismissed as “upstate”, as if they weren’t making sacrifices to have access to the city, is just myopic and ignorant.
