They make up the money in parts & repairs. I owned a Jetta while in college and those parts costs and repair bills are high! And that was me getting a family discount through my uncle's shop. Very little wiggle room on parts pricing for discounts to be passed through to the customer. I'd never own another VW.
Yup. My mechanic who only works on and drives VW's and goes to Europe for VW events claims they underprice their cars in the states because they make so much money on parts and also on maintenance through their US network. Our VW has been an absolute nightmare - things are just constantly breaking though miraculously everything worked fine until the warranty ran out. Constant problems with the heating and cooling and it seems like every part of the suspension system has had to be replaced. We've put 8K into the car in the last 4 years - obviously if we knew it would come out to that much we never would have sunk that much money. The car still drives as nicely as when we bought it and the mileage is still excellent (we have a pre-scandel Diesel) but we will certainly not buy another VW and discourage anyone else from doing the same and their Consumer Reports ratings are terrible as well.
Are you working for the competition?
