This.  It's one of those words that as soon as I hear I know that guy who said it is a loser.  They are typically guys who think that acting like an inconsiderate asshole makes them tough.  They don't realize that people just can't be bothered to call them on their sh!t and mistake annoyed tolerance by the adults in the room for being "beta."  One thing that I learned from years of MMA training and working out with a lot of cops, prison guards and bouncers --- really tough guys tend to be the nicest, most soft spoken and polite guys you'll ever meet, and with professionals it's not a question of being "alpha" -- it's just training and they don't get emotional about it. None of those guys is a timid, vacillating, indecisive weakling like the OP. What term would you use for a man who is a timid, vacillating, indecisive weakling? "Beta" at least has the virtue of economy.[/quote]
