I know people who entered government service in their late 20s or even early 30s after earning a Ph.D or law degree. Many years are spent diverting every extra dollar to student loans, daycare costs ($24k a year in the DMV), saving for a down payment for an expensive DMV house etc. The first 10 years can be very tight [/quote]
