Any yoga studio that makes you feel anything other than warmly welcome isn’t worth going to. Yoga is for every body. It’s not supposed to be about losing weight. Weight loss and fitness are wonderful side effects. But that’s not what real yoga is about. I would avoid any of the gym type yoga places. Look for a traditional yoga studio. There should be a spiritual component to the practice.
I agree, though I will see when I was a washington sports club member a decade ago, I had two really fantastic yoga instructors who regularly taught classes there who really were life-changing to me. That said, now that there are so many more yoga studios, all the good instructors might be flocking to them and away from the gym. But any reputable gym would require a certified instructor though, and yoga certification is pretty legit so any instructor should know that yoga is not a competition and that's completely opposite to what it's about. I'm a huge fan of yoga and have found most studios around here to be accepting of all skill levels and body types. I hope you stick it with it OP. I'm not overweight but I have some limiting back, neck, and knee issues so I'm not going to be doing crazy poses. I've found yoga to be really helpful for strengthening, flexibility, and reminding me to slow down and be more mindful. Best of luck with whatever your fitness goals are in the new year.
