I had a TAG watch purchased from a reputable online dealer that I received as a gift. I took it to a local jeweler (certified TAG) to get it sized correctly only to find out that it was a stolen watch. The jeweler was nice - showed me how they knew it and gave me the watch back. I called the online realtor who made it right. What they think happened was that someone was "cleaning" stolen property. That they purchased a watch - swapped out a stolen won and returned it. The retailer put it back in inventory and sent it to me.
So is the best way to prevent stuff like this from happening is to purchase expensive items in the store? After reading this thread and others regarding stolen purchases, I am starting to rethink making online purchases over a certain dollar amount...
Years ago I bought an iPad at the store (Best Buy) and when I opened it, the only thing inside was a bunch of cut paper to make it the same weight as an iPad in the box. It was even sealed (shrink wrapped) and everything. I took it back to the store and it was NOT easy to convince the Manager that I purchased it that way. He had to call the district or regional Manager for approval to swap it out. Approval was given and the other manager apologized for the inconvenience. When my replacement was brought out, I opened it in the store to make sure it wasn't just paper. I still don't think the Manager believed me that my box was full of paper. It still bugs me, but no, buying in the store doesn't always guarantee you'll get what you want.
