No one gets into college because they're an Eagle Scout.
My DC got into VTech Engineering with one and borderline grades.
They have a 70% admission rate. And when they said they were going to be more selective (56% acceptance), they went to the waitlist hard.
How many were pulled off the waitlist? I'm assuming a larger number/percentage than in years past.
You need to read up on Tech and the stats needed to get in. A lot of families were disappointed when they assumed their child was going to get in and didn't last year. This year is going to be worse. Applications are way up at all the in-state schools. You can't compare acceptance rate at a top flight public school to a private one. They serve entirely different types of students bodies. Those that apply to Tech are applying because they want the tech majors such as engineering, architectuure, animal husbandry, and other tech subjects. They are funneled into the system by their public school counselors who know which Virginia university would be a good fit based upon Naviance and their prior experience. The college counselors also write one letter of recommendation (even to Tech which sometimes doesn't ask for it). The counselors know you need a 4.0++ to get into Tech Engineering so will suggest the student apply to other more suitable Tech schools if the Va in-state student doesn't have the requisite stats. Hence, you get only the students who are have the requisite stats apply. It's quite difficult to get into some of the majors at Tech - especially those overrun by the OOS and international students.
