Just so people know -- even if people turn down spots -- that doesn't mean the school will go to the waitlists. It means the school has a formula based on based years as to what percent of kids they accept will actually accept the acceptance offer ....
It doesn's mean every single kid said yes, it means that Sidwell (and all the other schools) accept more kids than they have room with, knowing that some kids will opt for different schools. Most years they might pull one or two off the waitlist, some years they get it exactly right, and occasionally they take too many and end up with an overenrolled class.
I know that's how colleges do things, and I'm sure that some local schools do that for some grades. But I really wonder whether schools do that when filling small K or PK classes of 20-26 kids. For classes that small with very young kids, it seems like having even a small oversubscription would be a significant hassle. For example, if the PK class is meant to be only 20 children, and the school accepts 22 based on an assumption that 2 will choose to go elsewhere, that could mean a 10% oversubscription if all accept and would materially impact the student/teacher ratio. By contrast, for a 9th grade class of 120-150 kids, a variance of 2-6 kids matters less. I have no inside info, but I actually suspect that many local schools dealing with small classes will admit only the actual class they expect. With many schools requiring parents to make decisions in just 3-4 weeks, it's easy for them to fill gaps with the waitlist. I'm just guessing though. Does anyone know for sure how any local school operates for a PK/K class of 20-25 kids?
