The Otto cycle with a small gasoline engine has thermal efficiency rates approaching 33-34%. Compared to an electric mower, where a typical fuel like coal or methane gas must be burned in a powerplant elsewhere to create the electricity that flows in the power grid to charge the battery to run the mower, losing efficiency in each step along the way, gasoline creates its energy at the end-destination, making it a FAR more efficient means of doing work for unit of energy.
