I grew up in CheCheVi and while I have a lot of feelings about the place, its history, and the people who live there, no one has ever, ever been "offended" by someone saying "Chevy Chase" and not meaning the village. Mostly because it's not true, obviously, as "Chevy Chase" is much larger than the village. It makes no sense. It's not even a good fake story.

Some better fake stories:

- I know a guy who moved in and tried to borrow a lawn mower - no one on his block owned one, but one woman offered to loan him her guy. 
- My mom lives there and she likes it because when she calls the Village Police about unfamiliar cars on her block they come right away. 
- Our neighbor had a heart attack on his lawn but he was saved because there was a USSS car parked nearby that had a defibrillator.[/quote]
