The internet backbone for the country is in Nova. That's why they are going there - to be close to the data. Plus, both of those companies work closely with the USG on intel and technology contracting. This has nothing to do with MD business climate and EVERYTHING to do with where the agencies - and hence Big Fed $$$ - are located. Investments by the USG in NoVA 30 years ago are paying huge dividends for NoVA. Land in NoVA was much cheaper back then than land in MD.
See also the international airport.
Yes, it's called BWI.
But BWI options are more limited than IAD's and BWI and it takes longer for someone in MoCo to get to BWI than it does for lots of folks in VA to IAD. For a lot of MoCo, IAD is actually closer than BWI. But, MD's business climate, particularly in MoCo, is also a big part of the problem.
Of the 3 airports in the region, BWI does the most passenger traffic and has had record growth. Dulles used to be #1 about 10 years ago, but it's stagnated and BWI is booming. Reagan would grow more, but there just isn't the space. Dulles is the leader by a long way in international flights, but BWI holds it own and then some when it comes to domestic traffic. It's also much faster to get through; has more parking options; and has just had one expansion and they just approved doing another. That said, as a MoCo resident, MoCo in particular is business-unfriendly thanks to a lot of the anti-business members of the county council. The term limits referendum is helping to somewhat clean house, but the prospect of Elrich moving from there to County Exec does not bode well.
