I understand your point, but let's not rewrite history. America took a long time to helo the Jewish people fleeing Europe and closed its doors to Jewish refugees at the beginning of the conflict. Also took a pragmatic approach to refugees. My mother spent her first  years of life (years, not months) in a US military administered camp in Gernany. When they finally came over they were "handed" pretty much nothing except the chance for a new life..I'd say that her parents life was pretty hardscrabble and.miserable in the American ghettoz but due to having home literary practices and a value in education the second generation was able to make it - though there is a lot of dysfunction in our family from these war and poverty origins. Please don't look back through rose colored lenses when you apply the "lessons" to today. Our forefathers were FAR more pragmatically inclined than you seem to imagine, [/quote]
