Yes, my upcoming 3rd grader got into 2 GT classes next year.
I think they offer GT in Language Arts and Math at 3rd grade. Not sure when they identify for other subjects.
They also identify for science and social studies.
Social Studies??
Social studies/history. Really the designation for this and science means that the kid can handle more in-depth studies, complex projects, etc as opposed to being “gifted in social studies.”
NP. That’s interesting. I wondered how they evaluated for social studies — especially for K or 1 evals, which I know are not especially common.
The science and social studies evals depend a lot on student work product and teacher observations for indications that the child has the ability and inclination to think beyond the four corners of the lesson. So if a kindergarten class does a float-or-sink lesson and during the follow up discussion the kid makes reasoned suggestions of other items that might float or sink based on what they observed during the experiment, that could be a sign. For social studies, during a lesson on the first Thanksgiving, the kid might respond to the teacher saying the Pilgrims and Indians traded goods by asking how they traded if they didn't use the same money.
