We were just in Mexico for spring break at rosewood mayakoba. Based on the many American families I saw there, including at least a half a dozen from the DMV area that I met over the course of a week, no everyone is not avoiding Mexico. We felt safe the whole time. Went off resort a few times for various excursions. Did all the typical precautions and everything was fine.
OP here. Did you go to Xcaret? The last time we went, kids were still pretty young so we didn't go.
we went to xcaret over spring break. Had a great time. How old are your kids? The underground rivers are fun, but tiring! Definitely must use the flippers (we didn't and regretted it pretty quickly). Also, if your kids are under 10, they probably will not like the dark parts. There are still some very small lights, but it's pretty dark. My 11 yr. old was mostly ok with it. My 14 yr old was not as happy with the darkness, but did o.k. I've read that little kids tend to have issues. The aquarium is great. MUST stay for the evening show Mexico Espectacular. It is really good. The aviary is good. We didn't pay extra for a dolphin/stingray encounter, but we would have had time for one extra event. It is a lot of walking. Let me know if you have specific questions. Definitely worth doing.
