My kid attends an emergent-curriculum kindergarten, and we've been nothing but pleased with the quality of the instruction. She's learning all the literacy and math skills she needs and is totally on track for first grade, but the way the curriculum is structured is really thoughtful and engaging. If you think it's overblown hype, just don't send your kid there. I think it's a great way to approach teaching little kids, but I also don't think there's a single best way to teach little kids.
