That is so not true, you must not have a high school student. Obviously it should be about learning but the fact that the grades are placed on your college transcripts screw the kids because they can't enjoy learning a language in middle school without the stress of the grades impacting them and their GPA until they apply to college.
No longer so. The new policy is that HS grades earned in MS, will not be on the transcripts unless parents and students want it to be. This way a bad grade in middle school does not impact the GPA. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikcra.pdf
It looks like they DO appear on your transcript but don’t get factored into your GPA unless you want them to be. But I don’t see a way for the grade not to be reported (unless you retake it). “b) For students who enter Grade 6 during or after the 2018-2019 school year, the final grade and credit earned for high school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be reported on the high school transcript, but will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA unless requested by the parent/guardian or the student if 18 years old or married (eligible student). Students/parents/guardians will be notified annually of procedures to follow in order to include such courses in their cumulative GPA.”
