At the middle and high school level I let my kids make the decisions about their schooling. You can't "make" a kid study for and take the SSAT. You can't "make" them interview well and write essays. Unless your public option is horrible, I would let your kids make this decision. I have twins: one applying to an elite private, one gung-ho about going to Wilson High School in DC. I know a half dozen parents with kids in DCPS high school and private high school, several of them twins. Everyone is happy and doing well.
These kids will have very different futures. They migend up ok but there’s no comparison between the education you’ll get at Wilson versus a sidwell or gds. and my kid is probably going to Wilson next year so I’m Not trying to bash it but it is what it is.
I'm the poster you're responding too. I've actually talked to a lot of parents who sent one kid to Wilson and the other to Sidwell or GDS. They're more out there than you would think. The consensus is that the Wilson kids do learn less but they know enough to succeed well in college level classes. And those who succeed at Wilson are incredibly savvy at advocating for themselves (in a sometimes dysfunctional system) and relating to others from every sector of society. Also--I know we've all heard this but I've found it to be true---these kids (from Wilson, Sidwell, GDS, etc) all get into and attend the same colleges.
I agree. My DC and friends also are excited about Wilson. If DC hadn't gotten in anywhere, we'd have had to work harder to keep her on track (not naturally savvy about self-advocating), but Wilson would be a path to success too. It is a one-of-a-kind school, and I totally get why lots of kids choose it over other options.
This family lives in OLNEY, the high school is SHERWOOD. They live 30+ miles out of DC.
I'm responding to the twin parent PP, obviously.
