When you visit, you might want to consider staying here:http://theoread.com/  I have  never even been inside, as that particular space used to be a little sandwich shop when DH & I were at KU..

Try to visit when school is in session. Spring or fall would be beautiful. I recommend a full day visit, allowing time to go down to Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence.

If your DC  is interested in the honors program or engineering, see if you can get an appointment with either or both. I don't know if the honors program gives appointments to students unless they have been admitted, but the engineering school definitely does and it is worth the time.
