just a general question but if my rising 9th grader wants to apply for a transfer to an AP school (currently slated for an IB school), will the counselor look at his current 8th grade transcripts, etc to determine eligibility or is pretty much every request honored.  He did not take many honors classes in 8th grade and grades are so-so.[/quote]

A student who requests a transfer for the AP or IB program must commit to the advanced academic program for grades 9, 10, 11, and 12:
a.
Each student must take a minimum of four AP or IB classes over the four years, with at least three by the end of the junior year.

Each student is expected to pursue a schedule of prerequisite courses for each program in the ninth and tenth grade years.[/quote]

Thank you.  I guess my question is does the counselor determine who he/she thinks will be successful in the program or is it up to the student/parent to decide.  My son has high hopes and would probably think he could do it, but a counselor may have a different opinion.   Just trying to understand the process. [/quote]

Not the PP you're responding to, but if you're referring to transferring for language --  if I were you I would absolutely ask this question directly of FCPS or (for a faster answer) whichever MS counselor at your child's current school handles academics and HS planning. I'd also ask soon, so you know. Just FYI, for AP or IB transfers, the counselors don't "determine" who transfers, based on ability or potential success; if there is space, your kid gets the transfer--though I'm sure counselors would discourage a kid from transferring for academics if the student had academic issues).

Did you post the question earlier about putting down the base MS instead of the base HS on the online form, and not being able to fix it? If so -- I would also contact FCPS about that rather than waiting to see if someone notices it and fixes it for you. There is an e-mail address for help on the transfer pages somewhere, I recall.

One last thing, remember, OP -- you have to renew the transfer status every single year your child is at the school. I know, it's kind of dumb, but I guess they do it to remind you that your child has to be taking the classes for which they transferred.... So this one transfer request in 8th grade only covers 9th grade; you'll be doing this again a year from now, and the next year too. I'm waiting for them to open the renewal requests later this week myself. Regarding "closed to transfer" schools, I know that for next year our HS is closed to transfers but we were specifically told in writing that our students who are already in the school as transfers will be able to renew and finish HS at the same school. If I were you, I would ask whether FCPS will guarantee that a student who transfers starting next year will be able to renew the transfer until graduation and won't be told to move back to the base school or to some further-away HS. I wouldn't have said that a few years ago but now things seem so tight with all the closed schools that if my kid were a freshman next year, I would ask this.[/quote]
