OP here. I asked my DD if I should talk to his parents, and she said if I do that, she'll never tell me anything in the future. Without knowing his last name, I can't find his parents' contact info without contacting the school.
I would probably let it be then if it were me. He doesn’t dangerous or worrisome- just stupid. Hopefully he won’t do it again and get in trouble.
OP here. Yes, that's what I'm going to do for now because I want my daughter to share with me going forward. She doesn't want to block him because she said he is her friend. She asked him if he's ever sent anything like that in the past, and he said it was his first time. Since she didn't want me to talk with his parents, I asked her to act as his parents and explain to him why this shouldn't have been done. If you have a teenager, it's just a reminder to talk with them one more time about their social media activity - especially if you happen to have an 8th grader who is really good at Quiz bowl :)
This is not just social media activity. This can cause legal issues for your daughter too, as, in eyes of the law, it's possession of an image, regardless how the nude pic got to her phone. Talk to her about that and she can tell her friend. If, by accident, they meet with the law enforcement that wants to make an example of both of them, it will be long and unpleasant process, all because of stupidity. If they were 18, it's a different story, lots if stupid things can happen, but those, most likely, would not involve a lawyer.
