We did a mega noisy plastic crap cleanout a while ago and it was awesome. The kids didn't even miss the toys. Some kids are just overwhelmed with all of the shiny noisy stuff. My kids enjoy playing with household stuff on the way to the trash, i.e. empty cereal boxes. You are not required to keep anything. Decide what he likes and ship off the rest. No one will miss it.
