Cancel the trip with the couple and do so via telephone call. They will ask you questions the entire time, it will be draining. Pay your share, if it's not refundable. First, call closest family members and best friends. Do it all in one day to just get it over with. Second, the next day write an email to everyone else who you believe should hear directly from you (other friends, distant family, acquaintances). BCC a bunch of people. If you're on good terms with your soon-to-be ex, jointly write and send the email. Specifically state something along the lines of "We appreciate your support and will be taking time for ourselves in the coming weeks. We will be busy sorting out life, so please accept our preemptive apologies if you don't hear back from either of us immediately." Some will write back with questions, but you're allowed to ignore them. Between those two avenues, word will spread pretty quickly.
I think this is a little over the top and silly. I’d just tell people in a straightforward, matter of fact manner as it comes up rather than a cryptic email. Most people won’t ask questions because they recognize it’s none of their business.
