Former Western Pennsylvanian here... I have a lot of fond memories of Idlewild - it's great for younger kids, but tweens/teens aren't going to get that much out of it. I haven't gone since I was a kid myself, and I'm not sure how much tickets were then, but $45 seems like a lot per person. Also Ligonier is about an hour outside of Pittsburgh (probably longer, depending on where you're staying in Pittsburgh, and tunnel traffic which can be ridiculous). Ligonier itself is a really pretty town, so if you do make it up that way, I'd encourage you to check it out. The town square is straight out of Gilmore Girls. They also have a fort from the French and Indian War that's also pretty cool. All of that to say - if you don't have youngish kids, or you're looking for more bang for your buck, Kennywood might be a better bet. They have actual, major roller coasters that are cool at any age.
Actually no, don't go with young kids. Kennywood needs 46" for rides. Check the ticket.
p There’s is an entire kids section at Kennywood, in addition to things like shows, train, carousel, etc. for those shorter than 46”. Surprised at how much weirdness this thread has generated - who knew everyone had an opinion on the merits of Idlewild and Kennywood?
I know, right! Here's mine: Idlewild is GREAT for little kids. My almost 5 and almost 3 year old love, love , love it. I don't mind taking them because the location is beautiful and it's really shady. Yes, there are lots of rural-type people who go there so it's not a super sophisticated place. Older kids will be bored out of their minds there, from about age 12 on up, though there is a water area that is pretty decent for them. Not worth the money though for older kids. Kennywood is great for all ages. In the area is also Sandcastle, a water park, which my then young teens really enjoyed.
