Because poverty takes a toll on people's psyches and well being. Children living in poverty deal with so many difficult issues and face traumatic experiences at a far greater rate than children in higher SES situation. This all has a tremendous effect on their mental and physical well being. Generally speaking, their bodies and brains are just not as ready to learn as they are processing/surviving all of the negative experiences. Not to mention dealing with poor nutrition and less sleep. Try working in a Title one school and you will see what I mean. [/quote]
