Wast of time
+1 It's all rote memorization.
Which is actually pretty important, IMO. You don't get enough of that in school.
Exactly. My daughter has always been pretty good at math, but she was a little slow in finishing her work. After just 2-3 months in Kumon, she could complete 100 addition/subtraction math problems in under 10 minutes with 100% accuracy. She definitely did not do that before Kumon. Her math confidence has also soared. Kumon is a serious commitment for sure (in both time and money), but I think that it's well worth it.
The reason east Asian countries (Singapore, China, Korea) are so highly ranked in mathematics in the primary and secondary levels is because of the fact that their education system is based on rote memorization. For the type of math Kumon teaches, rote memorization is the best method.
Yep. The waiting room at my Kumon center is full of African, Asian and other immigrant parents. It seems as if only American(ized) parents are concerned about the "danger" of rote memorization.
Yep, had the sweetest Ethiopian Uber driver last week who could barely speak English, but told me all about enrolling her 5 year old in Kumon. I might give it a try because I think that memorizing math facts is really important. I only think it's negative when it's in a high-pressure setting (like lots of tests when the child isn't actually prepared). that's demonstrated to actually cause math anxiety. but if Kumon makes it fun I'm all for it.
