Our kids swim for a very strong NVSL team, not in Division 1. What am I most proud of? Aside from the kids being double winners some weeks and attaining personal bests, I am most proud to see them extend their hand after each race to the swimmer(s) in the next lane(s). The character-building that comes from training, putting the hard work in, and, IMO most importantly, congratulating the swimmer next to you who beat you, or the one who lagged behind, is why we as parents encourage our kids to swim and compete. If it's all about winning, I do not want my kids on that team. There are so many exceptional swimmers in the NVSL - congrats to them, and may they model positive sportsmanship for their teammates, their competitors, and for the young kids who look up to them.
Sounds like you have the priorities correct and understand what it's all about. However, I venture to say the perception (whether fair or not) of most other teams in NVSL is that the Division 1 teams are arrogant and obnoxious. Whether it a vocal minority at each pool or a culture in Division 1 I'm not sure, but just realize that many if not most other teams and pools in NVSL have this view. And no, it's not jealousy. The sooner that NVSL leadership recognizes this and acts upon it, the better for all of the league.
