Yes its convenient, out of baltimore, and you'll save on airfare,  but  generally you'll see older ships, with limited destinations.

miami and tampa are the big departure points for cruises.  Maybe a few out of JAX

most ships will have some sort of a kids club.  its free, and the kids will love it.  even the older kids.  as it gives them a way to hang with people of their own age and not be tied to mom and dads hip.  Remember its a boat, not like you can take a cab to another city and get lost.

set up hard time when to meet for dinner and such.  there is always food being served so let them do their own thing.  if they are big into soda's  get one of the bottomless cups for them.  Other wise, waters, coffee tea, and juices are always free.

I would reccomend a late seating for dinner.  this way if you are in a port of call you like,  you don't have to rush back tot he ship for dinner.  that beiong said.  if you don't want to sit in the dinning room for dinner,  food is served elsewhere so you don't have to "dress up"

if you are really concerned about keeping touch with the kids,  get some of the two way radios.   we never did  and daughter and nephew did just fine.

youd be surprised how often you'll bump into them during the day...

I've probable been on 10-12 cruises.  I like it.  but i'm easy to please.
