OP- Also join the "Arlington Education Matters" FB page. It is a closed group, but open to anyone who cares about educational issues in Arlington. Just let the moderator know that you have a future APS child in the pipeline when you submit your request. Most of the School Board members are also on AEM and it is not anonymous so they tend to take the AEM comments more seriously than DCUM. (I've heard Barbara K tell people *not* to listen to DCUM, but she actually engages with people in the comments on AEM.) And of course vote in the caucus! I think Maura McMahon is the only School Board candidate to come out explicitly in favor of building a 4th comprehensive high school at Kenmore. Same with Peter Fallon at the County Board candidate level.
So I attended the most recent candidate debate, and Ms. McMahon does favor a fourth comprehensive HS, but did not state an explicit location. My understanding of her answer was, that if they could build it somewhere else, she'd be amenable (even if it meant fields were adjacent, like a short walk away--there were a couple properties in the FAC report where this was the case--big enough for a school, but all the field space would have to be elsewhere and would be more complicated to do this, but might be worth it if those with all the information, about cost, traffic analysis, etc. could make a compelling case that this would be better). I think she was clear that she did not favor a zoned school that was "less than" in any way. I think Ms. O'Grady's answer was similar, in not favoring a zoned school with fewer amenities or opportunities. Mr. Lander explicitly stated that he favored the Ed Center site, but not whether he favored a 9th grade academy and/or an option program, and if so which option program. Whatever happens with the election, he will be the only one actually able to vote on this matter.
PP, or anyone else, is the debate available for viewing anywhere? I was not able to attend.
